10.2.2 Electronic DNI (DNIe)
The National Identity Document (DNI) is issued by the General Directorate of the Police (Ministry of the Interior), and certifies the identity, the personal data that appears on it and the Spanish nationality of its owner.
The DNIe incorporates an integrated circuit (chip), capable of safely storing information and processing it internally.
Its purpose:

Electronically prove the identity of the person.

Digitally sign electronic documents, granting them legal validity equivalent to that provided by a handwritten signature.

Carry out telematic procedures.
To use it, you need a personal computer and a smart card reader. The browser will request the PIN (personal password that, once verified by the microprocessor included in the chip, allows access to the functionalities available in the DNI ) and will then display the certificate store for choose the appropriate one (authentication or signature).
The holder of the DNI can change this password or PIN at the DNI Update Points (PAD) existing in the Issuance Offices DNI ##3##.
