More than a tonne of cocaine hidden in a container of pineapples from Panama seized in the port of Algeciras
- The drug was detected by a scanner control and was found behind several palletized boxes of fruit.
August 30, 2024.- Officials of the Customs Surveillance Service of the Tax Agency have intervened in the port of Algeciras a container from Panama that, together with its declared legal cargo of pineapples, was transporting 1,086 kilos of cocaine hidden among the fruit.
The operation began when a container scanner was used to check the contents, which gave an image that did not match the goods declared for that container.
After opening the equipment and physically inspecting it, several rows of palletised boxes were found, containing the pineapples described in the documentation and, after unloading, the narcotic substance was discovered distributed in 914 packages, packed in boxes hidden among the pallets that carried the fruit and which were identical to those containing the pineapples.
The seized cocaine is believed to be worth almost 33 million euros on the market. This action is part of the efforts made by the Tax Agency's Customs Surveillance Service in the fight against illicit drug trafficking.
