More than 200,000 euros hidden in a package seized at Palma airport
- It is considered one of the largest cash seizures made at this airport.
December 11, 2024.- Customs Surveillance Officers of the Tax Agency and agents of the Civil Guard have seized 209,970 euros hidden in a package, sent through a parcel company.
The investigators from both bodies worked together as the Risk Analysis Unit (UAR) of Palma airport, whose responsibilities include the analysis of information of interest related to the risk assessment of passengers and goods, as well as the inspection of goods in the customs area of the Mallorcan airport.
At the end of November, agents detected a suspicious package at the cargo terminal. This shipment had a high concentration of weight for its dimensions, and after carrying out an initial inspection by scanner, the agents detected that it had a metal structure inside.
After opening the package, the agents found a safe inside. An X-ray inspection was subsequently carried out, which revealed that the safe appeared to be full of banknotes. After identifying the sender, he was summoned to the airport customs offices.
On December 3, the owner of the shipment appeared in person and in the presence of the agents, the safe was opened. Bundles of banknotes of different denominations were found inside, totalling 209,970 euros. To date, this is one of the largest cash seizures made at Palma airport.
In light of the facts described, and in accordance with the provisions of the Money Laundering Prevention Act, the entire amount of money was seized, since the sender and owner of the safe violated the obligation to have declared the shipment of such amount to the Tax Agency, by sending the money hidden in a closed safe through a parcel company.
