More than five kilos of cocaine seized in a vehicle in the province of A Coruña

  • The drugs were hidden behind the front seats using an elaborate, artisanal concealment system.

December 13, 2024.- Customs Surveillance officials from the Tax Agency and National Police officers, in an operation aimed at detecting the entry of narcotic substances into Galicia by road, have arrested a man who was transporting more than five kilos of cocaine on board a car.

Different controls are periodically established on the access routes to Galicia, and in different areas within the Galician Community, in order to detect transport of narcotic substances in this community.

As a result of the coordination of information between the two bodies, it was possible to verify that one of the vehicles suspected of being used to transport narcotic substances was leaving Galicia on the A6 motorway, heading for Madrid.

On his return, on the same day, the vehicle was intercepted at a toll booth on the AG55 highway, heading towards Carballo, where, after its occupant was identified and the vehicle inspected, more than five kilos of cocaine were found in an elaborate artisanal concealment system behind the front seats known as a "caleta."

It is estimated that, if sold per dose, the seized cocaine would reach a value on the illicit market of close to one million euros.

Following his arrest and the preparation of the corresponding report, the detainee was placed at the disposal of the second Court of Instruction of Carballo acting as a guard.

This intervention against drug trafficking has been carried out jointly by the Regional Narcotics Information Group of the Customs Surveillance Operational Unit of the Tax Agency in Galicia and the Drugs and Organized Crime Unit of A Coruña.

The Customs Surveillance Service, a body attached to the Customs and Excise Department of the State Tax Administration Agency through the Deputy General Directorate of Customs Surveillance, has as one of its main responsibilities the repression of smuggling.

Likewise, one of the facets of the investigative work carried out by the officers of the National Police Corps of the Superior Police Headquarters of Galicia, assigned to the Drugs and Organized Crime Unit (Udyco Galicia), is the collection of information, analysis and exploitation of it for the repression of drug trafficking and organized crime in its various criminal forms.
