AEAT and Civil Guard seize three and a half kilos of gold at Barcelona airport

  • The gold was traveling in a suitcase belonging to a 70-year-old passenger.

December 18, 2024.- Officials from the Regional Customs and IIEE Department of the Tax Agency in Catalonia and agents from the Tax and Borders Unit of the Civil Guard at Josep Tarradellas-Barcelona El Prat Airport seized 3.5 kilos of gold on November 26 from a 70-year-old French passenger, who was carrying 3.5 kilos of gold in her luggage without declaring it and who was preparing to take a flight to Nantes (France).

The discovery was made at the access filter to the restricted area of the airport, during the usual controls carried out by the airport security guards, who detected blue objects in the luggage scanner.

When the Civil Guard officers were notified, they carried out a physical inspection of the luggage and discovered four gold bars weighing 3,500 grams inside.

The Civil Guard officers proceeded to identify the passenger and verify the origin of the gold bars, although she was unable to present the documentation required to justify the possession of the gold, preliminarily valued at approximately 200,000 euros.

They then proceeded to draw up a report of infringement of the Law on the Prevention of Money Laundering and the investigation is now focused on determining the origin of the gold, which has been placed at the disposal of the Administrator of the Customs of Barcelona Airport.
