Two arrested for attempting to introduce cocaine hidden in beauty and nutrition products into Cantabria

  • The drug was found in a package from Ecuador that was the subject of a delivery monitored by agents of the Customs Surveillance Service

July 3, 2024.- Officials of the Customs Surveillance Service of the Tax Agency in Cantabria have arrested a man and a woman as alleged perpetrators of a crime against public health for drug trafficking, seizing an amount of cocaine to be determined. The drugs were hidden in a package from Ecuador containing beauty and nutrition products, which was the subject of a controlled delivery by SVA agents to arrest the recipients of the shipment.

The action is based on a communication received by the Regional Operational Unit for Customs Surveillance in Madrid on June 26. Officers from the Risk Unit at Adolfo Suarez Madrid-Barajas Airport detected a postal shipment from Ecuador that, when examined by X-ray, showed densities compatible with narcotic substances.

The postal package from Ecuador claimed to contain a series of beauty and nutrition products. Taking into account the characteristics of the package and the data observed in relation to the recipient and the delivery address, it was agreed to carry out the necessary actions to proceed with a controlled delivery, with the corresponding authorization from the Madrid Court on Duty.

The next day, the package was delivered under surveillance to its recipient, a Spanish woman living in Ramales de la Victoria, who came with another person, who claimed to be the real recipient of the package, which is why they were both arrested.

This second person, a man of Colombian origin, stated that he did not have a Spanish identification document, which is why, and according to his statement, he asked the woman, to whom he had rented a room in his home, to appear as the recipient of the package and that she would be the one to receive it.

After the package was opened at the courthouse in Laredo, three of the containers in the shipment, with a combined gross weight of 2.3 kilos, tested positive for cocaine reagent after the narcotest was performed.

The detainees have been sent to prison, in accordance with the judicial authority's order.
