The Press and Research in the Classroom: taxes and fraud

Area : Spanish Language and Literature. Type : Individual/group. Level : Second cycle of ESO.

  • Search for famous people who have been convicted of fraud or tax evasion.

  • Concretely state the moral judgment that these behaviors deserve.

  • Look in the newspapers for a news story about a case of tax fraud. Write a note with the other frauds (civil, commercial, labor, etc.) that this fraud has given rise to.

  • Look in the newspapers for news about Social Security fraud, fraud in the purchase and sale of homes, etc. Write a note about the tax fraud that has resulted.

  • Investigate newspaper reports about money laundering networks and tax havens (non-cooperative jurisdictions). Write a review of what you found.

  • Look in the newspapers for news about misuse of public property (painting over informational signs, breaking park lampposts, painting over bus shelters, burning trash cans, stealing street signs or traffic signals, etc.). Write a note about the damage caused and the money it costs to replace these items.

  • Choose one of these topics:

    • Write a story about famous criminals who have committed crimes and were eventually arrested for tax fraud (for example: Al Capone was one of them, but there are more.

    • Write a story about cases of private citizens or companies that have deceived people, their customers, or their shareholders. He cites the frauds (labor, commercial, tax, etc.) they had to commit to avoid being discovered and how they were ultimately found out and punished.
